Spring is Here!

Spring is officially in there air here in central Indiana. Our temps today were in the mid 80s! Okay, so that is near a record, but we had one of the most gorgeous weekends I can remember. There was hardly a cloud in the sky and everything just seemed to be alive.

My crabapple tree is in full bloom and is just absolutely gorgeous. I also know that summer is just around the corner when my plants go out on the patio. Honestly, I do best with succulents (i.e. plants that you don't have to remember to water). In the summer time, my patio is covered with various cacti. What I love about spring and our fairly humid weather is that the cacti all bloom. If you've never seen the glorious flowers of a cactus, you are surely missing out on a little piece of mother nature's beautiful canvas. One of my cacti is just starting to blossom and apparently the wasps are enjoying it. I got off a couple macro type shots of a wasp on the plant before he seemed irritated by my presence.

Along with photos of my yard are photos of my dog. Aside from my horse, she is probably one of my most photographed subjects. She is my little shadow and followed me around the yard while I inspected mother nature's work. True to form, is currently laying at my feet snoozing as I type this. What a rough life she has! ;) She can be seen in the last photo chewing on her favorite toy...a fresh stick from the back yard.

I hope you all enjoyed the weekend where ever you may have been.

Shoot for Friends of Ferdinand, Inc.

I had a very fun shoot opportunity yesterday. As a volunteer photographer (and foster home/trainer) with Friends of Ferdinand, Inc., (a racehorse rescue), I was invited to attend a "Meet & Greet" with one of the organizations granters. The granter was Tony Stewart, of NASCAR fame. FFI took two horses and a few volunteers, along with two vets that have donated services to the organization and specifically to horses that are being supported by Tony Stewart grant money.

While at his place, we were able to watch a commercial being shot for Coca-Cola, we participated in a video interview done for the foundation and last but definitely not least, we were all able to visit with members of his family. It was very apparent to me that his "bad boy" reputation portrayed by the media is greatly exaggerated. Tony, and the rest of his family, were incredible gracious hosts and they are most definitely animal lovers. Not only were they thrilled to have the FFI horses and volunteers as guests there, they are also active in rehabing wildlife for the DNR. We saw them caring for whitetail deer and baby raccoons while there. While I will not post pictures of Tony, you most likely be able to see some of my images on the Tony Stewart Foundation website in the near future. Also check Friends of Ferdinand, Inc. as they will be there as well.

Here are a few pictures of the two horses that were there. His property is absolutely gorgeous and we had a fabulous time.

IHSA Zone 9 Championships

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of photographing the IHSA Zone 9 Championships hosted by Purdue University and held at Foxton Farms in Romney, IN. Many thanks to Laura Lemanski and Jerry Steinmetz (coaches of the Purdue team) who graciously reserved space for my table (and my husband) in the heated lounge.

The show itself was a great success. I was thrilled to see the University of Wisconsin-Madison team present as I was a founding member of this team back in 1998 (back when I was president of Hoofers). UW-Madison ended up winning the show and their team qualified for nationals. Considering the first UWET had less than 1/2 a dozen members, its fun to see how far the team has come.

However there were many good rides yesterday and my congrats goes out to each team and individual who qualified and participated. I look forward to seeing local riders this summer and perhaps at an IHSA show in the fall.
